Roy Brouwer, M.S.c in Agricultural Economics from Wageningen Agricultural University in the Netherlands and Ph.D. in Environmental Economics from the University of East Anglia in the UK, Executive Director of the Water Institute and Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Waterloo, and expert advisor to Environment and Climate Change Canada. He is the adjunct Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where he was head of the Department of Environmental Economics between 2009 and 2015, visiting Professor in the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, member of the External Advisory Board of the Vienna Technical University’s Doctoral Programme on Water Resource Systems and Editor-in-Chief of the Elsevier journal Water Resources and Economics. In 2018, Dr. Brouwer was awarded a distinguished University Research Chair for his outstanding work in the field of water resource economics. His research focuses on hydro-economic modelling and economic valuation and pricing of water resources. His work has been published in more than 120 peer reviewed international journal articles that received more than 7,600 citations. He has written guidelines for the European Commission to support implementation of the European Groundwater Directive and Water Framework Directive. He has acquired over $5 million in grant funding over the past 5 years, including European research programs such as Horizon 2020. He leads the research program “Water Security as a Foundation for Healthy Communities and Sustainable Livelihoods” funded by the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship for Advanced Scholars in Canada recently.
